The name of the chemical compound that can be a marker of this aging is 8-ox0-7,8-dihydroguanosine, shortened to 8-oxoGsn. This compound is produced continuously throughout life because it is a product of damage to RNA, an important molecule that interacts with DNA to activate gene expression and create proteins in the cell nucleus.

If the aging process is defined as a proliferation of prolonged cell and tissue damage, then a compound that can measure RNA damage will be an appropriate marker to measure aging.

In this latest study, experts observed more than 1,200 men and women in China aged 2 to 90 years. They found that there was an increase in 8-oxoGsn levels with age. In other words, the levels of this marker are higher in older people.

Levels of 8-oxoGsn levels are not much different between men and women. However women who have gone through menopause show a higher 8-oxoGsn rate. This may happen because of the decrease in estrogen hormones that occur during menopause, while estrogen is known to have antioxidant effects.
